Lengthened Partials: Do They Build More Muscle?

The opposite is a shortened partial: the top half of a curl, the lockout of a press, the peak of a leg extension. Those are the ones that earned partials their bad reputation.
The mechanism is thought to be mechanical tension. A muscle fibre under load at a long length experiences more tension than the same fibre at a short length, and tension is the main growth signal. Full range reps spend a fraction of each rep in that zone. Lengthened partials spend all of it there.

Do lengthened partials build more muscle than full reps?
Sometimes, and by a small margin. Often not at all. The honest answer is more boring than either camp on social media wants.
The strongest single result is in calves. Kassiano and colleagues had participants train calf raises for eight weeks using full range, shortened partials, or lengthened partials, and the lengthened-partial group gained noticeably more medial gastrocnemius thickness than the others, according to the 2023 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.
Pooling the wider literature gives a smaller picture. A systematic review of 24 studies comparing partial and full range training found only a trivial overall difference in hypertrophy (SMD = 0.12), though the handful of trials using lengthened partials specifically tended to favour them, according to Wolf and colleagues in the International Journal of Strength and Conditioning.
What the newest evidence says
The best-powered test so far went the other way. A cluster-randomised trial ran 297 trained participants across 15 training sites for 12 weeks, comparing lengthened partials against full range of motion. The between-condition effect on arm cross-sectional area was -0.032 and on thigh cross-sectional area was 0, which the authors describe as practically equivalent, according to the multi-site trial on SportRxiv.
An earlier trial from the same group trained 25 lifters twice weekly for eight weeks and reported similar upper-body hypertrophy between conditions, according to Wolf and colleagues in PeerJ.
Treat lengthened partials as another legitimate way to accumulate hard sets. They let you keep working a muscle after the full range version has run out of road.
Which exercises suit lengthened partials?
The good candidates share one trait: the exercise gets easier as the muscle shortens, so the bottom half is where the real work lives.

- Preacher curls. A trial in 13 trained lifters found preacher-curl partials at long lengths produced slightly better regional biceps hypertrophy, while full range was better for strength, according to Havers and colleagues.

- Romanian deadlifts. Stopping short of lockout keeps the hamstrings loaded.

Which exercises should you leave alone?
Anything where the bottom of the range is the dangerous part or the unstable part. Partials add reps in a position you are already weakest in, which is fine for a lateral raise and a bad idea under a loaded bar.
Skip them on:
- Squats and deadlifts. Fatigued partial reps out of the hole is how form falls apart, and the systemic cost outruns the local benefit.
- Bench press. Extra failed reps with a loaded bar over your chest are a bad trade.
- Anything a joint complains about. No hypertrophy result is worth an angry shoulder.

How do you actually program lengthened partials?
There are two sane ways to use them, and one way to make a mess.
Option one: the finisher. Take your normal full-range set to a hard stop, then continue with bottom-half partials until those also fail. This stacks extra hard reps onto a set you were already doing, which is the thinking behind effective reps.
Option two: the substitution. Run whole sets as partials, for example three sets of twelve lateral raises in the bottom third. This is what the studies above tested, so it is the version with actual evidence behind it.
The mess is doing both at random. If some weeks you finish with partials and some weeks you do not, your log stops meaning anything, because the reps are no longer the same reps.
A reasonable dose is one or two isolation exercises per muscle per week, for a few weeks at a time.
How do you log lengthened partials without corrupting your data?
Almost nobody handles this part, and it quietly ruins progression tracking.
A partial-rep set is not comparable to a full-range set. You will get more reps at the same weight purely because the range is shorter. Write Lateral raise 12x14 after a partial set and next week you will think you got stronger, when all you changed was how far the dumbbell travelled.
