How to Log Supersets, Drop Sets and Circuits

Quick answer: Log each exercise on its own line exactly as you normally would, then mark the pairing rather than merging the entries. Write A1 and A2 for supersets, chain the weights with arrows for drop sets, and label the round for circuits. The set data stays comparable; the structure becomes a note.

Straight sets are easy to write down. Bench 80 8,8,7 and you are done.

Then you pair bench with rows, or strip plates twice on your last set, and the neat line falls apart. Most people give up and write "superset" with no numbers, which means that session may as well not have happened.

Why do supersets break most workout logs?

Because logging formats assume one exercise at a time. A superset is two exercises interleaved, so a format built around a single exercise per block has nowhere to put the second one without losing the order.

The usual failures look like this:

  • Merging both lifts into one line. Bench/Row 80/60 8,8,8 reads fine today and is unparseable in March.
  • Writing only the structure. Superset chest and back 3 rounds records that you trained, not what you lifted.
  • Splitting them apart entirely. Accurate numbers, but you lose the fact that they were paired, and pairing changes how heavy each one felt.

The fix is to stop trying to encode the pairing inside the set data. Keep the numbers in their normal shape and let a short label carry the structure.

One exercise per line, always. That single rule solves most of this.

How do you write a superset in a workout log?

Use letter-number labels, the same convention coaches write on programs. Exercises sharing a letter are performed back to back; the number is the order within the pair.

Should you record rest differently for supersets?

Only if the rest changed. Supersets usually cut inter-set rest, which is where the time saving comes from. If you normally take 2 minutes and dropped to 45 seconds between pairs, that is worth one note at the top of the block, not on every line.

How do you log drop sets?

Chain the weights with arrows on one line, because a drop set is one set. The whole point is that there is no rest between drops, so splitting it into three entries would imply three sets and inflate your volume count.

How do you log a circuit?

Label the round, then list the exercises inside it. Circuits repeat a group of movements, so the round number is the unit that matters.

That looks longer than "circuit x3" and it is. It is also the only version that shows you push-ups fell from 15 to 11, which is the information you came for.

Do supersets actually save time?

Yes, and by more than most people expect. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in Sports Medicine by Zhang, Weakley and colleagues found supersets reduced training time by around 37 percent compared with traditional straight sets.

The rest of that review is the reassuring part. Total repetitions and volume load came out similar between the two structures, and so did long-term gains in maximal strength and muscle size. Supersets did feel harder: rating of perceived exertion was higher, pooled across six studies.

That trade explains the logging problem. You are compressing a session into less time, which makes it tempting to compress the record too. Resist that. Shorter session, same number of lines.

Which logging setup handles these best?

The one that does not force your structure into fixed fields. This is where rigid gym apps struggle: a drop set has to be entered as three sets or not at all, and the app then counts them as three.

Plain text wins on flexibility because it has no opinions. The catch is that plain text also cannot chart itself, so you end up with a perfect record you never look at.

A simple starting plan

  1. Pick your notation this week. A1/A2 for supersets, > for drops, R1/R2 for circuits. Write it at the top of your log once.
  2. Keep one exercise per line. Whatever the structure, never merge two lifts into one entry.
