When Should You Use Lifting Straps?

Lifting straps buy real reps on a deadlift and changed nothing on the lat pulldown. Where the evidence says to use them, and how to log it honestly.

When Should You Use Lifting Straps?

Quick answer: Use straps on heavy pulling work where your grip fails before the target muscle: deadlift back-off sets, rows, shrugs, and long sets of pulldowns. Skip them on your top deadlift single and on anything where grip is the point. The evidence is strong for deadlifts and surprisingly weak for back exercises.

Straps carry more guilt than any other piece of gym equipment. People who happily wear a belt, knee sleeves and lifting shoes will refuse straps on the grounds that it is cheating.

The research does not describe cheating. It describes a tool that works well for one specific job and does close to nothing for another job people constantly use it for.

What do lifting straps actually do?

They transfer load from your fingers to your wrists. A strap wraps around the bar and around your wrist, so the bar hangs from a loop of fabric rather than from a grip you have to maintain.

That solves one problem: your forearm flexors fatiguing before the muscles you were trying to train. It does not add force, it does not change the bar path, and it does not make the weight lighter.

Do lifting straps improve deadlift performance?

Yes, clearly, and in more than one way.

Jukic and colleagues published a study in Physiology and Behavior with 16 men doing four sets of four deadlifts at 80% of their one rep max, with and without straps. Straps produced greater mean and peak bar velocity, less grip fatigue across the session, faster grip strength recovery afterwards, greater perceived grip security, and lower perceived exertion.

Trahey and colleagues ran the equivalent test in women, publishing in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. Ten trained women did three sets to failure at 80% of their one rep max. With straps they completed significantly more repetitions and lost significantly less grip strength, with no cost to bar velocity.

Two populations, same direction. More work done, less grip fatigue, and the lifter feeling better while doing it.

Do straps help on rows and pulldowns?

Much less than you would expect, and possibly not at all.

This is the finding that should change how most people use straps. Valério and colleagues tested it directly in Sports Biomechanics. Twelve resistance-trained men with an average of 6.6 years of experience did lat pulldown one rep max tests and three sets to failure at 70% of one rep max, with and without straps.

Nothing changed. One rep max was 96.5kg with straps and 96.6kg without. Repetitions per set did not differ. Total repetitions did not differ. Latissimus dorsi activation did not differ.

A 2026 exploratory review in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance reached the same conclusion across the wider literature: straps can enhance maximal strength and grip perception, but for pulling and back exercises no consistent effects have been observed. The review also notes that, contrary to popular belief, straps do not appear to increase muscle recruitment, and there is no evidence at all on what long-term strap use does to training adaptations.

Why the difference? In a deadlift the bar hangs from your hands for the whole set and grip is genuinely the weak link. In a lat pulldown at 70% of one rep max, the bar is on a cable, the set is short, and your grip was never going to fail first.

When should you use lifting straps?

On deadlift volume work. Back-off sets, rep work, anything where you are doing five or more reps and grip fatigue accumulates across sets.

On rack pulls, shrugs and heavy rows. Loads that exceed what your grip can hold, on movements where the target muscle is the back or the traps.

On long sets and drop sets. Twenty-rep pulldown finishers and strip sets are exactly where grip runs out first.

When your forearms are already cooked. If yesterday was heavy pulling, straps let today's session train the muscle you planned to train.

When you are gripping hard enough to hurt. Torn calluses are a real reason to stop a productive set.

When should you leave straps off?

On your heaviest deadlift single. If you want a max that means something outside the gym, hold the bar.

On warm-ups and lighter sets. Every unstrapped set is grip training you get for free.

On anything you compete in. Most strength sports do not permit them, so train the thing you will be tested on.

On pulldowns and rows at moderate loads. The Valério data says straps changed nothing on the pulldown. Using them there costs you grip work and buys you nothing.

What about mixed grip and hook grip?

Both solve the same problem differently. Mixed grip stops the bar rolling but loads your biceps asymmetrically. Hook grip holds double-overhand at almost any load but hurts for the first few months. Straps are the option that costs nothing and trains nothing.

Most lifters end up using all three, mixed or hook for heavy singles and straps for volume.

Why do straps quietly ruin a training log?

Because they change how many reps you get at the same weight, and nothing in a standard log records that.

The deadlift trial in women found significantly more reps to failure with straps at the same load. So deadlift 140kg 8 in March and deadlift 140kg 6 in January is either genuine progress or one word of missing context.

The same trap catches you in the other direction. Take the straps away for a competition or a test and your numbers drop for a reason that has nothing to do with strength.

Write "straps" next to the set. That is the whole fix.

A simple starting plan

  1. Find out whether grip is actually your limiter. Do one set to failure without straps and note what stopped you. If it was your back or your legs, you do not need straps on that exercise.
  2. Introduce them on deadlift back-off sets only. Leave the top set unstrapped.
  3. Keep the load identical for the first strapped session. You want to see the rep difference, not chase a bigger number.
  4. Write "straps" on every strapped set. One word, every time.
  5. Test unstrapped every four weeks. One heavy double, double overhand, no straps. That is your real grip number, and feeding your top set into the one rep max calculator keeps the estimate honest.

Do lifting straps make you stronger?

Not directly. Straps do not add force, they stop your grip ending the set early. Do lifting straps help with lat pulldowns and rows?

Will using straps weaken your grip?

Only in the sense that a muscle you stop training stops improving. No study has shown straps actively reduce grip strength. Using them on volume work while keeping your top sets and some rows unstrapped keeps grip training in the programme without capping your back work.

When should a beginner start using lifting straps?

Once your deadlift or row load regularly exceeds what you can hold for the planned reps, which for most people happens somewhere past bodyweight on the deadlift. Before then, grip is rarely the limiter and you gain more from building it. Learn a double-overhand and a hook grip first.
